Most sports are full of lessons for the discerning. Tennis is no exception. Wimbledon 2005 is over now but hopefully some of the lessons described below will live on for ever.

In the first week of Wimbledon on June 20th 2005, a commentator asked why Venus Williams, a former Wimbledon champion, was only fourteenth in the women’s circuit.

As one might expect, John McEnroe had the answer:

Rifling through the pages of the latest Golfsmith, Edwin Watts, or TGW catalog, it’s hard not to dream about walking up to the first tee box and drawing a fancy new driver from your bag. For many golfers, however, the prices of these costly new toys is simply too prohibitive. Take for example the new TaylorMade R5 Dual driver, which not only comes with “dual launch control ports,” but includes a price tag of nearly $600 as well.

There is a more budget-friendly alternative, however. For some, it may seem like the golf world’s equivalent of a shady character peddling imitation watches on the side of the street. However, the world of “knock-off” golf clubs has moved from weekend

duffers assembling clubs in their basements to big business. Thanks to retailers who specialize in these clubs, the more politically correct title of “clone clubs” has been adopted as well.

Why has the word Standard Length lost all of its meaning in golf? What happened to Standard meaning that all things being the same you would get what you expected? In years past this definition has lost its true meaning, and in no more apparent place then in driver lengths.

Twenty years ago the standard length of a driver was 43 inches. Drivers have now stretched to as much as 46 inches! So what does this mean? Think about it drivers are getting longer and people are not getting taller. Twenty years is not enough time for us humans to genetically evolve, even though we would like to think so sometimes. Secondly, it means that

for the majority of golfers hitting fairways is becoming increasingly more difficult.

If you could find one thing that probably every golfer in the world would like to improve, it will be his or her drive. While we all have our own area that need improvement, or that we need to work on to really get comfortable with, a longer, straighter more powerful drive is something that every golfer, no matter what their abilities or level, would certainly benefit from.

There are really three aspects to a good drive. The first is direction. There is really no point in having a very powerful golf drive if you have no control over where the ball will fly once you hit it. Control over the direction of the ball is vital therefore. Getting

a better control over the ball depends to a degree on your technique, but also on experience. There are certain ways you can improve your swing so that you will have more control over the fly of your ball once you drive it. There are many exercises and practice routines that you can find the work on this aspect of your drive.
